French defence major Thales Friday announced its first deliveries in software-defined radio (SDR) networking lab solution that enables armed forces to carry out operations in a network-centric battlefield environment, the firm's officials said here Friday.
The SDR networking land enables armed forces, the customers for such products, to develop and adapt their own SDR-standard waveforms and integrate them with SDR platforms, said Patrice Caine, Thales vice-president in charge of radio communications business, at a press conference at the defence exposition here.
The SDR Networking Lab is a complete set of tools and solutions that let users define, develop and adapt new generations of waveforms with high data rate and network-centric capabilities.
These waveforms can subsequently be ported to SDR systems compliant with the software communications architecture (SCA) international standard.
With the shift to network-centric operations, the SDR Networking Lab gives armed forces and defence organisations the ability to develop their own network waveforms to meet their specific operational requirements, with guaranteed joint and combined forces and international inter-operability.
?Thales is proud to announce these first successes with the SDR Networking Lab, which confirm our position as a key partner in the development of SDR technologies and standards,? Caine said.
?At a time when almost all operations are conducted by coalition forces, SDR, with its unique capacity for interoperability, is a crucial component in the continuing evolution of the digitised battlespace,? he added.
Thales is involved in the European Secure Software Defined Radio (ESSOR) programme and is an active contributing member of the Wireless Innovation Forum.
During recent testing in real conditions, Thales and US electronic major Rockwell Collins FlexNet SDR have achieved a two megabits per second data rate at a range of 35 km.
The data rate is four times greater than previously fielded for the FlexNet radios. This success confirms FlexNet position as the heart of the most advanced digital battlefield solutions.
This high bandwidth broadband connectivity is essential on the modern battlefield, as Command, Control, Communication, Computing, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) applications are presenting ever increasing demand for higher data rates to exchange battlefield intelligence and situation awareness information.

Tarzan is not only king of the jungle — he's also king of the "poop pants." He certainly wouldn't own that title, but his companions on newly merged tribe Tikiano know better, having seen the 64-year-old plastic surgeon's dirty underwear up close, personal and in their precious pot of boiling water. But the eccentric Tarzan's filthy habits weren't filthy enough to buy him a one-way ticket out of "Survivor: One World" this week. Instead, it was sushi chef Jonas who became the latest contestant voted out of the game, not because of any personal flaws — indeed, it was widely agreed upon that his skills as a cook were a great asset to the tribe — but because he was the biggest threat to win the game outside of the dominant alliance. Ultimately, Jonas' strengths became his fatal weakness.
Once again, we speak with two-time "Survivor" contestant Rob Cesternino about this week's episode, covering Tarzan's so-called "poop pants," Jonas' untimely demise and life after Colton Cumbie.
MTV: I really liked Jonas from the very beginning of the season; I thought he had potential to go deep into the game. I'm not sure now if Jonas was a good player with bad luck, or maybe he just wasn't a good player to begin with.
Rob Cesternino: Can't it be both? I mean, through most of the season, Jonas was just playing second fiddle to Colton. He said it himself: "I don't mind being Colton's bitch." Unfortunately, when Colton was out of the picture, it looked like Jonas was going to emerge and make a run of this thing. But there's not much he could have done. He was down in the numbers. He couldn't mount an effective strategy here with that being the case.
MTV: At this point in the merge, there are 12 people on the tribe. It's as good a time as any to get a big threat like Jonas off the field. But it also strikes me as a time where you can cut some of the dead weight, like Tarzan, from the tribe. Do you think the right choice was made: getting rid of the likable guy — who's an excellent chef to boot — over the annoying crazy person?
Cesternino: Absolutely. You want to get rid of the capable person because Jonas can win the game. Ideally, you want to grab Tarzan and do whatever you can to get him to the end of the game with you, just like a few seasons ago [on "Survivor: Redemption Island"] when Boston Rob took Phillip to the end with him. Jonas had a good chance to win, of everybody currently playing the game. I know it stinks for Jonas that he gets voted out, because now it looks like he's not as good at the game as some of the people who are still there, but that's not the case. You get rid of the people who are the threats to win, whenever you can, and you keep around the dead weight.
MTV: Tarzan really is one of those perfect final three candidates: He has zero chance of winning, at least in my eyes. But the alliance he's in is so thin at this point — if you can even call it an alliance — and the majority group in this tribe doesn't seem to have much interest in pulling him along for the ride. Of all the people playing the game, who do you think is the likeliest person to wake up and smell the coffee and decide to bring Tarzan to the end?
Cesternino: That person for me is Troyzan. He's with these women, and at some point, the lightbulb should go off: "I'm voting with these Salani women right now, but at some point, it's going to come down to them trying to get rid of me and Jay." I think Troyzan might be the guy who says, "Oh my god, Tarzan is getting on everybody's nerves, he's putting dirty underwear in everybody's water. This is the guy I need to go to the finals with."
MTV: It was a big week for Troyzan. He found an immunity idol, he won an immunity idol ...
Cesternino: Not only did he win individual immunity and find an idol, he also went on a reward! This is his island! He didn't get any of his underwear in the same pot of water with Tarzan, either. It was all on the up and up for Troyzan this week. [Laughs] I've liked him for a while on this show. I think he's starting to emerge as a guy who could go the distance. But it's really important for him to not just go to the finals with the status quo. He needs to make a move and switch things up. I did some math on this last night, and long story short, I think there are five women who are going to vote together until the end — the younger girls with the alliance from the beginning — and there are six people left who are not in that alliance, the five men plus Christina. With 11 people left in the game, I think this upcoming episode is the one where Troyzan needs to make a move.
MTV: It's interesting. The Salani alliance seemed solid for a while, but already in this episode, you see cracks beginning to form. Do you think these new alliances are going to stick, or do you think we'll be back to men versus women before too long?
Cesternino: You know, I kind of feel they're going to stay tight for a while. I still kind of think Salani is going to go after Tarzan, and go after Leif, and then start to turn and take out a Michael. I think that's going to be what happens. But I'm hoping that's not what happens.
MTV: Yeah, that becomes the Kim and Chelsea show pretty quickly.
Cesternino: Yeah, it does. I'm hoping for whatever can happen to keep my man Tarzan in the game. I mean, what a night for Tarzan! Really, the whole last 20 minutes was the Tarzan show. I don't want to hear that this is strategy that he's doing, because he's just so perfect. What a great job by casting, finding this guy. I'm loving Tarzan. I'm thinking of plastic-surgery operations to get so that I can meet Tarzan in person.
MTV: Oh, man. [Laughs] I don't know that you want to trust yourself in that guy's hands, no matter how many degrees and licenses he has ...
Cesternino: Well, he's apparently an expert in microbes. [Laughs] I'm not concerned. I'll get on the operating table and let Tarzan open me up anytime. He has entertained me so much this season.
MTV: This was week one post-Colton. How do you feel about "Survivor: One World" without Colton?
Cesternino: I wasn't really missing Colton too much last night. There was so much going on with Jonas and Tarzan fighting, with Tarzan's "poop-gate," so it wasn't too bad of a first show without Colton. I think if we start getting rid of the big personalities like Tarzan, that's when you'll miss Colton as a viewer.

It?s an exciting time to be an intellectual property lawyer in Canada. After several starts and stops, Bill C-11, a.k.a. the Copyright Modernization Act, is well on its way to the Senate. This is the fourth attempt to reform copyright and bring it into the digital age.
Still, even though it appears to be a done deal at this point, no one seems too happy about it. In fact, significant litigation is anticipated as stakeholders test the limits of the legislation. And intellectual property lawyers who specialize in copyright will clearly play leading roles in determining how the legislation will ultimately be implemented.
It?s fitting to see who Chambers Global 2012 has ranked as leading practitioners in the intellectual property space, as many of those counsel will be involved in the copyright debates going forward.
The topic is an emotional issue for many people, says Barry Sookman, a partner with McCarthy T?trault LLP in Toronto and a Canadian authority and blogger on intellectual property law and copyright. In fact, Mr. Sookman is recognized as a Band 2 ranked practitioner for intellectual property law in Chambers Global 2012, one of two mentions he receives in this year?s directory; he is also ranked as a ?Star Individual? for technology law. McCarthys was ranked as a Band 2 firm in the practice area.
In addition to copyright affecting individuals in more palpable ways than it ever has, there has also been a very prominent activist agitation about digital issues in the social media, he says.

?When you get people all heated up and vexed about copyright and worried about moral panics, there are great divides ? and to some extent that has impeded rational debate,? Mr. Sookman says.
On one side, creators and rights holders believe the new reforms take away much of their ability to earn a living while giving too much power to the users of their work in the form of expanded fair dealing and user-generated content exceptions. The users of those intellectual works want the Internet to be free and unfettered and are opposed to provisions for new methods of individual enforcement of copyright ? namely digital locks.
Perhaps appropriately, much of the debate has played out online. Everyone is upset and the blogosphere is on fire with criticisms and concerns.
Another part of the problem is the fact that there has been no copyright reform since 1997 and now the government is playing catch up. Mr. Sookman provides some background. ?Since 2000, the government has taken a series of important steps to create conditions to promote electronic commerce. It started by introducing privacy legislation to promote confidence in digital networks, then it introduced electronic commerce legislation, and most recently the government passed an anti-spam law again (Legal Post, March 21) to promote the use of the Internet and get rid of hazards.
?The one piece that had been missing is copyright. In that context, it?s all an attempt to recognize the world is changing. It?s becoming digital and this Act is an important step to build that framework.?
From where he sits having represented both rights holders and users, Casey Chisick, a specialist in intellectual property law with Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP, believes Bill C-11 and its predecessor Bill C-32 are going about it in the wrong way. Mr. Chisick is ranked as a Band 2 practitioner in Chambers Global, while his firm, Cassels Brock, is recognized as Band 4. ?My view is that these bills have eliminated some of the most modern aspects of the Copyright Act we already had and that?s got nothing to do with digital technology,? Mr. Chisick says.
?In 1997, in the last major round of copyright reform, the Liberal government of the day introduced a whole series of reforms that facilitated collective administration of copyright. Secondary use of copyright is almost inevitably about a series of highvolume, low-revenue transactions that no individual rights holder could practically manage to track or economically afford to enforce. That?s the function of a collective society. Bill C-11 seriously impairs and reduces the scope of what collective societies such as Access Copyright are able to do for the benefit of their rights holders.?
As a result, he also believes the government has failed to meet one of its promises with the legislation: to balance the needs of rights holders and users. ?From an individual rights holder?s standpoint, it?s never been more difficult to enforce individual copyright.?
But given that there is so much intellectual property available on the Internet for free, is copyright protection even possible? ?Of course it is,? Mr. Sookman says. ?If the laws do nothing to help promote the digital exchange for value then it?s a problem. When governments enact legislation that can support the market, the evidence shows that these laws work. Does that mean there is an iron-clad way to prevent all unauthorized file sharing? No. But this is not about getting the very last person to stop file sharing. It?s about giving the creative industries a chance to compete on an even footing because you can?t compete with free.?
And perhaps the best way to do that, according to Mr. Chisick, is to focus on remuneration versus control. ?The answer I suggest would have been not only to maintain but to expand the availability of collective licensing solutions or alternative methods of compensation for copyright that reduce the scope of individual enforcement or licensing but increase the scope of other ways rights holders can earn money.?
For his part, Claude Brunet, who chairs the copyright and entertainment team at Norton Rose Canada LLP, is ranked as a Band 3 practitioner for IP law in Chambers Global 2012. The firm is ranked at Band 2. Mr. Brunet agrees with Mr. Chisick and goes on to argue that the government?s objective of trying to achieve a balance of interest between the two stakeholder groups was misguided.
?The goal of any copyright act is to organize the marketplace for works of the mind. Speaking on my own behalf and no one else?s, all this Act does is introduce exceptions to copyright protection.? He points to expanded fair dealing exceptions particularly in the area of education that will significantly impact authors and book publishers as an example. ?We are going completely the wrong way,? Mr. Brunet says.
?We are choosing control and litigation over a system of seamless remuneration, which we had in place. Bill C-11 creates an environment where the creator and the user are pitted against one another. It?s a piece of legislation that yells, ?So sue me.? We no longer make things. We create works of the mind. If we listen to ISPs and to equipment manufacturers, works of the mind are worth zilch. So what sort of economy are we building here??

Sitting at a table in a run-down bar on the edge of Ugandan capital Kampala, Stella Kobusingye stares into the distance as she recalls the tangle of lies and deceit that led to her sex-slavery ordeal.
Struggling to support her young son and ill mother with the income from a small shop, last year Kobusingye heard about a job opportunity earning $800 a month working at a Ugandan-owned boutique in Malaysia.
After triple-checking that the job was genuine, Kobusingye sold her shop, paid for a passport and bought a visa for China, where middlemen told her she needed transit, before being handed a ticket and boarding a plane.
But when she arrived in China, she was met by a Ugandan woman, taken to a hotel where scores of other Ugandan girls were staying and told she now owed $7,000 for the airfare.
"There were no jobs there, they had lied to me -- the only thing they had taken me there for was prostitution," said Kobusingye, who asked that her name be changed.
That night, a Nigerian man knocked on the door and said he had paid to have sex with her. Kept prisoner in her hotel room and with her passport taken away, for the next few weeks Kobusingye was forced -- sometimes brutally -- to sleep with up to five Nigerian men each night.
To scare her into silence, Kobusingye says her captors took her to a Ugandan witchdoctor there who used her fingernails and pubic hair to perform rituals.
Kobusingye's story is typical of a growing number of young and vulnerable Ugandan women who officials say are being duped into travelling abroad -- particularly to countries in the Far East and Middle East -- and then forced into prostitution.
In a country with massive unemployment and few opportunities, posters in shopping malls around Kampala advertise opportunities for well-paying jobs or studies abroad.
It is almost impossible to say how many Ugandan girls have been trafficked abroad but officials estimate in Malaysia alone -- a country with visa-free travel for Ugandans and growing economic ties -- there are currently about 600 Ugandan women in forced prostitution. No figures are available for the number of trafficked women in China.
During a recent visit to Kampala, Hajah Noraihan, a Malaysian working as Uganda's honorary consul in Kuala Lumpur, flicked through a series of horrifying pictures to show what happens to the girls who refuse to comply -- the face of a young woman thrown from a third-floor balcony, the body of another brutally murdered on a bedroom floor.
In the past two years, at least three Ugandan girls have been killed in Malaysia, she said.
Since late last year, Malaysian police have cracked down on the prostitution rings. In a single raid in October, 21 Ugandan women were discovered at just one location and there are around 60 currently being detained by Malaysian authorities.
With the help of the International Organisation for Migration, in the past five months 14 girls have been brought back to Uganda, Noraihan says.
Now Noraihan, a native of Kuala Lumpur, is pressing authorities in Uganda to deal with the problem at its source.
"We really need to see action on this, not just talk, not just reports. We need to see action on it and now," she said.
That pressure seems to be paying off.
Although several of those suspected of trafficking girls to Malaysia have already been arrested, critics say authorities have been sluggish or too poorly funded and trained to effectively crack down on those behind the rings.
Now though, officials from the immigration department to law enforcement agencies and presidential advisers have started meeting to discuss the issue and a group of lawmakers is pushing to visit Malaysia to undertake further investigations.
But public awareness of the threat remains low and the trafficking rings are highly organised and increasingly sophisticated, said Asan Kasingye, director of the Interpol office in Kampala.
"The criminals, these international rings, they are working against us. Instead of taking 10 girls, they might take one a week and if you go to the airport and there is a person going to Malaysia she will have documents saying she is going for studies," Kasingye said. And Uganda is just one of many sub-Saharan countries affected by sex trafficking.
Trafficking victim Kobusingye may finally be back home but she will never escape the effects of what happened to her.
After she attempted to find a way to flee China, Kobusingye's captors sent her to Malaysia, where they thought it would be easier to keep her.
But at Kuala Lumpur airport, immigration officials stopped Kobusingye. During several months in detention there she had a miscarriage.
Then she was told she had been infected with HIV.
Kobusingye was eventually sent back to Uganda with assistance from the International Organisation for Migration and the Malaysian consul. She is now trying to rebuild her life and start up a second-hand clothes shop. Antiretroviral drugs are free in Uganda, but the potential stigma of her enslavement weighs heavy on the young woman, who has not even told her own mother about what really happened while she was abroad.
While Kobusingye knows she cannot undo the past, she says she's praying those responsible are brought to justice.
"I want to get those people and take them to prison for the rest of their lives because right now I am sick but I have to take care of my kid, I have to take care of my mum," she said.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Some takeaways from Tuesday's Republican presidential primary in Illinois:
ROMNEY STAYED ON TOP
Mitt Romney notched another victory in a big, industrial Midwestern state ? and the front-runner did it by leveraging all of his advantages. He overwhelmed rival Rick Santorum with TV ads; he and his allies spent $3.5 million to $500,000, an advantage of 7-1 over Santorum. His superior organization made him eligible for all of the state's 54 delegates, while Santorum missed out on at least 10 because he didn't file the right paperwork. And Romney looked ahead to the general election, giving a victory speech squarely focused on Democratic President Barack Obama.
SANTORUM MADE MISTAKES
It's been a rough few days for the former Pennsylvania senator. On Tuesday, he was forced to distance himself from an earlier comment suggesting he didn't care about the country's unemployment rate. Over the weekend in Puerto Rico, he had to repeatedly explain his position on whether islanders would have to speak English if they want to become a U.S. state. And he had to answer questions about a fiery pastor who introduced him at a church service in Louisiana while suggesting that America is a Christian nation. Next up is Louisiana's primary Saturday, where Santorum will need a big win if he hopes to press forward.
THE GENERAL ELECTION HAS BEGUN
As Republicans in Obama's home state voted to choose the Democrat's general election opponent, Romney pledged to work across the partisan aisle ? or "die trying." It was his most direct appeal yet to the independent voters who will decide the fall election. And it's a shift away from the red-meat rhetoric that appeals to the conservative GOP base. With the Illinois win, Romney further solidified his status as the likely Republican nominee. Santorum has fewer chances to derail him. While he'll still face challenges in some Southern states, Romney's win means his campaign is rolling along toward the eventual victory his advisers have predicted all along.
DELEGATE RACE CONTINUES
The Illinois primary helped Romney advance in what appears to be an inexorable march to the 1,144 delegates he'll need to secure the nomination at the Republican National Convention in August. He won at least 19 delegates in Illinois, with 35 of the total 54 still to be determined. Santorum lost out on 10 delegates because his team botched paperwork. The former Pennsylvania senator faces an uphill climb in the delegate race: Romney has 541 while Santorum had 253, according to the Associated Press tally. At his current pace, Romney will accumulate the delegates he needs to wrap up the nomination in June.
HIGH INCOME, EDUCATED VOTERS LIKE ROMNEY
Romney won in Illinois with support from people with more education and higher incomes ? and from those whose top priority is defeating Obama in November. Romney doubled his margin over Santorum among voters with college degrees, according to early exit polls conducted for The Associated Press and the television networks. He won 20 percent of the vote among those who said electability ? being able to win in November ? was the most important consideration. But Romney was still weak among those who say they are "very conservative" ? Santorum had a double-digit lead in that group.
