DirecTV cuts 3-D channel from 24-hour to part-time

(AP) ? DirecTV says it has reduced the programming hours of its 24-hour 3-D channel, n3D, due to a shortage of 3-D content.

The satellite TV provider launched the channel to much fanfare in July 2010, boasting the backing of Panasonic Corp. The company said it was the first 3-D channel to operate around the clock.

A dearth of 3-D programs on n3D led to the same shows being run in a constant loop. Now, when there is nothing available, the channel will show the n3D logo. If there's an upcoming special event, details will appear on the program guide two or three weeks in advance.

The reduced hours began June 1.

It's the latest setback for 3-D TV, which has had trouble attracting mainstream audiences.

DirecTV's channel isn't the first 3-D offering to stumble. Last August, AT&T Inc. said its U-verse lineup of video channels would no longer include ESPN 3D. The company said the cost wasn't justified, "especially considering the low demand we've seen from customers."

Meanwhile, sales of 3-D TVs are growing. Tracking firm NPD Group said last month that 3-D TVs accounted for 11 percent of all flat-panel TV sales in the first three months of the year. That's nearly double the rate of a year ago.

DirecTV spokesman Robert Mercer said n3D will continue to air 3-D shows like "Guitar Center Sessions" and plans to air Olympics coverage in 3-D this summer.

To watch the channel, viewers need a 3-D ready TV, an HD receiver, and HD service, which costs $10 a month. The channel is available to all DirecTV subscribers.

'Sister Wives' star Kody: I am not a womanizer

Kyle Christy / TLC

The Brown family, from left, Christine, Meri, Janelle, Robyn and Kody.

By Anna Chan

"Sister Wives" star Kody Brown has four wives and 17 kids. That's known. But what isn't quite so common knowledge is why he and his family have chosen this polygamist lifestyle.

In a tell-all interview with NBC News' Natalie Morales, the family behind TLC's reality show -- Kody and wives Meri, Janelle, Christine and Robyn?-- answer Natalie's questions about polygamy, the revelations in their new book, "Becoming Sister Wives," and more.

One of the things the family brings up in the tome is Kody's past -- specifically, how he had a lot of girlfriends in high school. Some might say that's not particularly surprising, considering he now has four wives. (He's legally married to only his first wife, Meri.)

In a clip from TLC, Kody explained the girlfriend tidbit to his host, saying that when he was 14, he was trying to figure out his life as a wild boy and answering his calling to be a spiritual person.

Natalie's response? "So it wasn't that you chose religion to be a womanizer?"

After a stunned silence, Kody replied, "Is that what you think I am, a womanizer?" He went on to defend himself and his family, insisting that he had "done the emotional work" in his relationships with his wives, and "shouldered their needs as much as I could." And also, "I was never womanizing. ... This is NOT an open marriage," he insisted.

Check it out:

The Brown family's five oldest children also sat down with Natalie to talk about their lives. The interview special airs at 10 p.m. on TLC Sunday.

Kate Upton vs. Marisa Miller: Who'd You Rather ...

Kate Upton and Marisa Miller are back in the news this week, albeit for different reasons.

The former continued her reign as It Girl by posing for hot bikini photos in GQ, while the latter announced that she is pregnant with her first child.

Both curvy Sports Illustrated swimsuit models remain among Earth's finest specimens, whatever they're up to. So, the million-dollar question:

Which of the two would you rather ... take out for a nice dinner? Vote!

Xbox Surface: Is this Microsoft's new tablet?

1 hr.

Posting from Hollywood: New details have emerged about an Xbox-branded Microsoft tablet in advance of a mystery news conference planned by the company for this afternoon.

Microsoft news blog LiveSide.net has details on a Microsoft tablet called Xbox Surface, some of them via?the site Shifted2U.com. They come in the form of?a very legitimate-looking spec sheet ? revealing a 7-inch screen?with a 1280 x 720 resolution, SD card support, and a speedy 3.1 GHz processor, which sounds like it would be more of a battery hog than the chips used in existing tablet computers.

Mary Jo Foley notes that Xbox Surface could be linked to the Xbox SmartGlass project, unveiled at E3, a plan by Microsoft to connect Xbox Live to apps on Android, iPhone and Windows Phone. As we reported in the past, the trademark filing for SmartGlass referred to both hardware and software.

Whether this is the tablet that Microsoft is revealing this afternoon isn?t clear.?At this point we don?t know officially if Microsoft is actually revealing a new tablet today.?But we won?t have to wait long now to find out.

After traveling from Seattle this morning, I hitched a ride from the airport?with Wilson Rothman of msnbc.com and we?ve made our way?L.A. to the site of Microsoft?s mystery event in Hollywood this afternoon, at Milk Studios.

An initial?drive-by of the location didn?t reveal?any?secrets. Crews are busy loading audio and staging equipment through the rear entrance.

Stay tuned for live coverage from the event this afternoon. The doors open at 3:30 p.m., but no word yet on when the event actually gets going.

'Rock of Ages,' 'That's My Boy' flop at box office

By Pamela McClintock, The Hollywood Reporter

Comedy took a beating at the domestic box office over Father's Day weekend as 1980s jukebox musical "Rock of Ages" and Adam Sandler's R-rated "That's My Boy" did dismal business in their debuts.

Instead, it was holdovers "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" and "Prometheus" that continued to top the chart, staying at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively with $35.5 million and $20.2 million.

"Rock of Ages" topped out at $15.1 million to place third; "That's My Boy" grossed $13 million to come in No. 5 after being bested by holdover "Snow White and the Huntsman" ($13.8 million).

Video from THR: 'Tom Cruise transformed himself into a rock star,' says Malin Ackerman

"Madagascar 3," from DreamWorks Animation and Paramount, fell less than 42 percent from its opening weekend and has earned $120.5 million in its first 10 days of play domestically and a resounding $277.5 million worldwide (the toon also won the international race in grossing $53 million for the weekend).

Twentieth Century Fox's "Prometheus," falling 60 percent, has now earned $88.9 million domestically.

The soft performances of Adam Shankman's musical "Rock of Ages" -- with an all-star ensemble cast including Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand -- and "That's My Boy" are major disappointments for their respective studios and stars, and particularly Sandler.

"Rock of Ages," from New Line and Warner Bros., received a so-so B CinemaScore. The movie came in far behind Shankman and New Line's 2007 "Hairspray"?and Universal's 2008 "Mamma Mia!" Both of those movies -- likewise based on hit Broadway films -- opened just north fo $25 million.

Photos from THR: 28 of summer's most highly anticipated movies

One issue for?"Rock of Ages" was that it failed to rally younger moviegoers, despite leads Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta. Nearly 75 percent of the audience was over the age of 25, the demo that most relates to the film's music. Females made up the majority of those buying tickets, or 62 percent.

"The numbers aren't great. It's hard to fathom since the movie plays so well," Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman said. "I'm still optimistic we can overperform during the week because of women."

Both?"Rock of Ages" and "That's My Boy" cost just under $70 million to produce.

Sony's "That's My Boy," earning a B- CinemaScore, marks Sandler's lowest debut for a comedy since "Spanglish" in 2004 ($8.8 million). The film, pairing Sandler with Andy Samberg, is the actor's first R-rated comedy since "Funny People," which opened to $22.7 million in July 2007.

"Sure we had hoped for more. It is a crazy, off-the-wall raunchy R-rated comedy that audiences laugh like crazy at. Kudos to Adam for mixing it up," Sony president of worldwide distribution Rory Bruer said. "We love being in the Adam Sandler business."

More from THR: What the critics are saying about 'Rock of Ages'

Sandler has been one of Hollywood's most consistent stars in terms of box office performance, although last year's summer comedy"Jack and Jill" underperformed domestically, cuming roughly $74 million.

"That's My Boy" played fairly evenly among males (54 percent) and females (46 percent), even though the picture had been tracking best among younger males. The comedy did succeed in luring younger moviegoers, with 52 percent of the audience under the age of 25.

Elsewhere at the box office, Sony's "Men in Black 3" grew its worldwide gross to $544.3 million, while specialty titles "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" and "Moonrise Kingdom" continued to land on the top 10 chart domestically.

From Fox Searchlight and directed by John Madden, "Marigold Hotel" came in No. 8 with $2.2 million from 1,184 theaters for a North American cume of $35.1 million. Focus Features' "Moonrise," from director Wes Anderson, continued to expand nicely, grossing $2.1 million from 178 theaters for a cume of $6.8 million.

(AP) ? Microsoft is expected to make a "major" announcement Monday. Speculation about the Los Angeles media event is that the company plans to unveil either a tablet computer or a system that uses an upcoming version of Windows to help people access TV shows and movies across a range of devices.

A Microsoft-branded tablet wouldn't come as a complete surprise. In April, Microsoft announced a $300 million, 17.6 percent stake in Barnes & Noble's Nook e-book business.

Microsoft Corp.'s next operating system, Windows 8, is designed to run desktop, laptop and tablet computers. PC makers are hoping it offers them a better chance to compete with Apple Inc.'s iPad. Windows 8 is expected to be released in September or October, in time for devices that ship for the holiday season.

"This will be a major Microsoft announcement ? you will not want to miss it," the company said in an email invite to the media on Thursday. A company spokesman declined to comment further.

The event, set to start at 3:30 p.m. Pacific time, is being kept under such tight wraps that the company has declined to provide its location until Monday.
