If you?re eating enough quality calories your body will grow, period.

Of course, if you?re not weight training most of it will be added to your physique in the form of fat, but that isn?t our concern right now. Our concern is combining muscle blasting weight training with a diet that will force muscle growth of grand proportions.

I asked the young man that approached me what he was eating on a daily basis, to which he responded, ?Oh, I eat all the time, so my diet can?t be the problem.?

?Is that so?? I asked with my left eyebrow raised in obvious skepticism. I then implored him to be more specific with what he was eating and found that he was consuming about 3,000 calories per day, consisting of mostly fast food, potato chips, sodas and other junk foods.

?First?, I said. ?Stop eating that junk and give your body something to work with.?

?What do you mean?? He inquired.

?Put simply, the food you?re feeding your body has very little nutritional value and is loaded with preservatives and other additives that are raising your estrogen levels and hindering your ability to build muscle.?

?Oh.? He said. ?I never thought of it like that before.?

I gave him a few additional tips and the conversation ended shortly thereafter. But before he left, I gave him the following quick grocery list:

• Steak or Beef
• Chicken Breasts (skinless)
• White Fish and Salmon
• Whole Milk
• Whey Protein Powder and/or Powdered Egg Whites
• Potatoes and Sweet Potatoes
• White Rice
• Whole Grain Bread
• Broccoli
• Bananas
• Apples
• Oranges

I also was sure to give him one last piece of advice?

?If you ever find yourself not adding weight after a full week, eat more. I don?t care how much you think you were eating. If your body isn?t growing, it needs more nutrition.?

The Hardgainer Metabolism

More often than not, the biggest reason a hardgainer isn?t putting on size is that they aren?t eating enough calories. They have a lightning fast metabolism and feel like they already eat a ton.

At the end of the day, though, if you aren?t growing, you need more calories.

If you find yourself struggling to eat enough throughout the day, you can:

• Get yourself a weight gain supplement powder
• Add olive oil to your meals, mix it with your protein drinks, or drink it straight ? olive oil is pure fat and calorically dense (one tablespoon contains 120 calories)
• Eat more peanut butter (plain or on whole wheat bread)

Again, I don?t care how much you think you?re eating. If you aren?t seeing the needle on the scale move to the right after a week, you need more nutrition.

Hopefully you?re clear on how you need to be feeding your body to start growing.

Before we wrap up, there is one other often-overlooked aspect of gaining muscle we need to cover?

Resting Your Body

In part 1 I gave you a 3 workout weekly training plan to follow. You may be used to seeing five and six workouts per week with other training plans, but you have to trust me when I tell you that more is not always better.

For steroid users, five or six training sessions per week will work great. However, for the drug-free weight lifter this is too much, as it doesn?t allow for enough recovery time.

Remember, our muscles don?t grow while we are training them, but during times of rest. In fact, the time when muscle growth occurs most rapidly is during deep sleep when our body goes to work repairing strained muscle fibers, making them larger to prevent them from becoming strained when placed under similar loads in the future.

This is also why it?s important to make sure you?re getting at least 8 hours of sleep each night. Skimping on sleep takes away from the time your body has to focus on building up your muscles.

In other words, getting less than 8 hours of sleep per night is going to hinder your muscle growth. If you can swing it, 10 hours of straight sleep (or 8 hours of sleep with a nap during the day) is ideal.

It?s Time to Grow!

Struggling with being skinny, having very little muscle mass, not getting noticed by the ladies, and lacking self-confidence isn?t any fun. If this describes you, I want you to know that I feel for you.

Greek PM meets with France's Hollande

PARIS (AP) ? Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras is meeting with the French president in Paris as part of Greece's push to win more time to carry out wrenching cuts to avert a fiscal crisis.

Saturday's visit with President Francois Hollande comes a day after German Chancellor Angela Merkel hosted the Greek leader in Berlin and said she expects Greece to meet its previous commitments.

Samaras has argued this week that Greece should have more time beyond a mid-2014 deadline to complete reforms that are a condition of it continuing to receive bailout loans.

Merkel and Hollande met before Samaras' trip and put the onus on Greece to keep its pledges ? seen by many as a necessity to keep Greece in the eurozone and save the embattled currency.

Husband Walter and I are celebrating 45 years of marriage today. We have always been a bit casual about anniversaries. That fact has never bothered me. I have been blessed with a mate who regularly works on preserving and strengthening the glue of our relationship.That doesn?t mean we haven?t ever been beset by insidious solvents that are capable of dissolving the glue. But regular ?glue maintenance? and dependence on a faithful and sovereign God has given us the joy of both spontaneous and planned celebrations of life throughout the year. So today I celebrate life with one of those rare men, a guy who ?sticks? through good times and bad, who has never stopped growing in all aspects of life, who accepts me with all my irritating faults, who encourages me and engages me in adventures I would never have enjoyed on my own. Several years ago, I was invited as a guest on Oprah?s XM radio show to talk about spirituality and Law of Attraction. This was a huge opportunity that fell into my lap. I paid a college student to show me step by step how to create my own website. I had a fancy, expensive website for my bath and beauty products business at the time, but I wanted to be able have control over this website and make changes when necessary. I got the website live in a few weeks to really take advantage of this golden opportunity. Now I am so happy I learned how to have control of my website, which is the door to my business. Without this skill, you are basically opening a business and giving the only master key away to another person. Please don?t do that!

Skill 2: Learn to do Teleseminars.

My podcast site really began with a 30 day early morning inspirational teleseminar series. This series was then transcribed and turned into my first of many books. It has also become an audio program and a membership site with online video, journal prompts and more. Content rich teleseminars are a quick and easy way to create products.

Skill 3: Learn to Recognize When Your Niche is Picking You.

I had no idea several years ago I would be teaching product creation. Sometimes your niche is picking you and you don?t even know it. It?s important to open your eyes to the possibilities and not be married to one idea so you are able to see your golden opportunity.

Skill 4: Learn to Be a MacGyver.This is about being resourceful and resilient. MacGyver was that 80?s television show about a man who got the job done, no matter what, one way or another. This is the attitude you must have if you want to be successful at any business.

Hugh Laurie Drops 'RoboCop'; Christoph Waltz Sought For 'Candy Store' With Brad Pitt & Denzel Washington, Plot Details Emerge

Here's a quick update on two movies -- one with an actor leaving, another someone coming on board, so read on below...

It looks like Jose Padilha's "RoboCop" remake will need to find a new villain as Variety reports that "House" star Hugh Laurie has pulled out of negotiations for the film. He was eyeing the role of?CEO of Omni Corp., who creates RoboCop for his own gain. With production gearing up soon for a release date that is now less than a year away, we're guessing the search for someone to fill the role is going to be intense. Any suggestions? The studio is apparently eyeing Clive Owen among others as possibility. Starring Joel Kinnaman,?Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Jay Baruchel, Abbie Cornish, Jennifer Ehle, Michael K.Williams and Marianne Jean-Baptiste, "RoboCop" patrols on August 9, 2013.

Meanwhile, it seems Stephen Gaghan's script for the thriller, "Candy Store," is drawing serious heat. Yesterday it was revealed that Brad Pitt, Denzel Washington and Jamie Foxx were all eyeing roles in the movie, and now The Wrap reports that Christoph Waltz now has an offer to star as well. But even more, some plot details about the untitled movie have emerged.

Set to be directed by Gaghan as well, the story follows a deep cover agent who loses everything and starts over as a beat cop in Brooklyn only to discover the organized operation he was trying to bring down is alive and kicking right under his nose. Damn. The character Pitt will potentially play is named Mark Swain, while Waltz will play Black Zenga. This is all pretty early going and distilling the various trade reports, it appears to be on wishlist territory with?Christian Bale, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Bradley Cooper all on the whiteboard as people the filmmakers might approach if they can't get their first choices. So basically, the standard roster of dudes every studio or producer wants in their movie.

Will any of this high-profile casting stick, or is it a good way to drum up interest for a movie? Guess we'll see how it plays out.

Chimp Research Facility Found Not Guilty of Breeding Animals

The NIH ruled that a Louisiana animal research facility that allowed its chimpanzees to reproduce in captivity was not breaking a breeding moratorium

Senior officials at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) have concluded that a major chimpanzee research centre did not violate the biomedical agency?s breeding moratorium, despite 130 infants being born at the centre to NIH-owned parents between 2000 and 2010 (see 'Lab bred chimps despite ban').

The assessment, carried out by the NIH?s Office of Extramural Research and obtained by Nature under the US Freedom of Information Act, argues that the New Iberia Research Center (NIRC), part of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, did not violate the 17-year-old moratorium for two reasons. First, its 3?4% mortality rate during the period matched those of other NIH-supported chimpanzee centers. Second, the centre did not make additional charges to the NIH as a result of the births.

?Based on?a decrease in census and no increase in cost?NIRC has not violated the [NIH] moratorium,? the document states. It also argues that the NIRC?s contraception program ? which it says led to a 13% average annual conception rate in the years leading up to 2010, down from 50% in 1995 ? ?is within acceptable limits? for preventing pregnancy in the federally owned colony. It notes that the NIRC has assumed ownership of the infants, as is required under its written agreement with the NIH.

The Louisiana centre houses approximately 350 chimpanzees, of which the NIH owns 111. The agency pays the centre more than US$1 million a year to maintain its own animals and to support about 100 other chimps. Because of the high costs of lifetime maintenance of chimpanzees, the NIH has had a breeding moratorium in place since 1995. During the period in question, the NIRC used contraceptive methods that included: housing males and females separately when social groupings allowed; performing vasectomies on selected males; and using the implantable progestin Norplant and intrauterine devices.

Ongoing efforts
James Blanchard, the interim director of the NIRC, said in an email this week that the NIRC?s conception rate for the past two years has been less than 1%. This, he wrote, ?is a reflection of our ongoing efforts to provide responsible management of the NIH chimpanzee colony.?

But Kathleen Conlee, vice-president for animal-research issues at the Humane Society of the United States, which first learned of the births through public-records laws, says that the criteria used by the NIH to determine whether the ban was breached ? whether the center?s costs or total census increased ? are ?unacceptable?. ?How NIH has interpreted whether the NIRC bred chimpanzees is very misleading,? she says. ?It should be based on whether breeding occurred.?

Conlee notes that an NIH working group is now determining criteria for the agency?s funding of future chimpanzee research, responding to a report made last year by the US Institute of Medicine that concluded that invasive research is largely unnecessary. In addition, Congress is considering a bill that would end invasive research in great apes (see 'Bill to end US chimp research advances'). In this context, Conlee says, NIH officials ?are driven to not appear as if they weren?t properly monitoring the situation?.

But Gregory Kaebnick, a bioethicist at the Hastings Center in Garrison, New York, says that the drop in the reproduction rate during the moratorium indicates that ?the chimps were breeding, but the NIRC arguably was not breeding them?.

However, he adds, ?Though what NIH is doing here is comprehensible, within the letter of the law, there?s a certain amount of foot-dragging. Ultimately, they need to come to terms with the larger ethical debate.?

How The Life Insurance Industry Rushed to Sell Annuities To Near ...

As older Americans? appetite for guaranteed retirement income grew over the years, so did the range of annuities offered by insurers to people eager to trade lump sums for future monthly payments.

With pensions quickly vanishing, and 401(k)s tied to unpredictable markets, retirees increasingly looked to financial products like variable annuities that promise a comfortable retirement without the risk and tax consequences of other investments.

Between 2001 and 2010, life insurance companies sold about $1.4 trillion worth of variable annuities, according to an industry group.

In an investigation by the nonprofit ProPublica, journalist Jake Bernstein chronicles how the life insurance industry over the years moved away from the ?business of insuring lives to peddling complex financial products,? sometimes to the detriment of older or sick people.

Variable annuities are not suitable as short-term investments or for very old clients, and they tend to be more expensive than other financial products.?Some insurers and brokers have come under fire in recent years for selling them to people who really shouldn?t be buying them.

Bernstein writes that in the years leading up to the financial market crash of 2007-2008, insurers were so eager to sign people up that the companies got burned themselves. They wrote ?billions worth of contracts that now imperil their financial health.?

ING has exited the business and is writing down billions in losses, Bernstein reported. ?Transamerica is trying to buy back some of the variable annuities it sold to policyholders. The French insurer Axa is offering its variable annuity holders money if they surrender their death benefit guarantees.?

Bernstein examined the case of a Rhode Island financial planner, Joseph Caramadre,?who prosecutors allege illegally exploited insurers? annuity contracts for his own gain. He contends he was only doing what the fine print allows.

Instead of the typical setup???a retiree buys the annuity and the death benefit is paid to the beneficiary, usually a spouse or child???he came up with an alternative. Caramadre or one of his clients would buy an annuity for someone who was not expected to live long, with whom they had no relationship. They would name themselves as beneficiary and collect profitable payouts when that person died. Along the way, prosecutors say, identities were stolen, families were deceived and companies were swindled.

Financial experts warn older adults who are considering a variable annuity to understand its payout and fee structure before signing on, and to determine its suitability as an investment.

Legal Firms Adopt ShoreTel's VoIP-UC Platform | CRM Daily

ShoreTel is touting the advantages that law firms can derive from the deployment of the company's on-premises VoIP platform with integrated unified communications (UC ) capabilities.

"ShoreTel is simple to manage and law firms don't need to hire external support," a company spokesperson said Thursday. "This saves law firms money over the life of the system."

The company's on-premises technology also can be easily customized, which results in better time management and tracking --- criteria which are critical to the legal industry, said Shoretel Chief Marketing Officer Kevin Gavin.

"Without it, the needs of a client can be jeopardized and customer satisfaction threatened," Gavin said.

Some legal professionals like having traditional phones on their desktops while others prefer to use instant messaging and "soft" phones. But having disparate communications systems really limits what capabilities can be introduced, is too expensive and also hard to maintain, said David Michel, CIO at the law firm of Burr & Forman, which has offices throughout the South.

"We wanted an easier approach to share information -- especially for lawyers who travel to depositions, hotels, meetings, and such," Michel said. "We chose ShoreTel for its ease of use, simplicity, total cost of ownership, disaster recovery , and cost savings."

'Strong Positive' Rating

ShoreTel was the only top-tier business VoIP phone system vendor to gain a "strong positive" rating in Gartner 's latest report covering UC platforms for small- and medium-size businesses in North America. By contrast, Shoretel rivals Avaya, Cisco , Interactive Intelligence and Mitel received positive ratings, whereas Alcatel-Lucent, Digium, Microsoft , NEC, Siemens Enterprise Communications and Toshiba were rated as promising.

"The vendor ratings speak for themselves," said Gartner Research Director Jay Lassman.

Overall, ShoreTel has designed a solution that effectively addresses IT -constrained organizations' needs for easy-to-use, easy-to-manage and easy-to-implement communications solutions.

"The user, administration and implementation simplicity as well as the inherently redundant architecture of ShoreTel 13 is well-suited for most SMBs' UC needs and resource limitations," wrote Lassman and the new report's co-author, Megan Marek Fernandez. ALEPPO, Syria (Reuters) - Troops and tanks swept into a town near Damascus on Thursday in an assault aimed at crushing opposition to President Bashar al-Assad in Syria's increasingly bloody civil war.

Artillery and helicopters hammered the Sunni Muslim town of Daraya, killing 25 people and wounding 200 over the last 48 hours, opposition sources said. Soldiers moved in and raided houses.

"Artillery is firing from Qasioun Mountain in regular bursts of heavy barrages. I wonder what is left of the town," said one woman watching the shelling from Damascus.

At least 100 people, including 59 civilians, died in violence across the country, according to the opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Some 200 were killed on Wednesday.

There was little resistance as Assad's forces pushed toward the centre of Daraya on the southwest edge of Damascus. Armed rebels had apparently already left.

"They are using mortar bombs to clear each sector. Then they enter it, while moving towards the centre," said Abu Zeid, an activist speaking by phone from near Daraya.

Assad's military had driven insurgents from most of the areas they seized in and around the capital after a bomb killed four top security officials on July 18. But rebels have crept back, regrouping without taking on the army in pitched battles.

Tanks and troops attacked the southwest Damascus suburb of Mouadamiya on Monday and Tuesday, killing 86 people, half of them in cold blood, according to Assad's opponents.

It is hard to verify such assertions due to state curbs on independent media. Syrian leaders say they are fighting "armed terrorists" backed by Western and Gulf Arab nations out to topple Assad for his resistance to Israel and the United States.

CHECHEN KILLED

Foreign fighters from Arab and other countries have joined Syrian rebels, possibly including Rustam Gelayev, son of a late Chechen rebel warlord in Russia's Caucasus region.

Russian media and websites sympathetic to Islamist insurgents in the Caucasus reported that Gelayev had been killed in Syria, with some saying he had been fighting against Assad.

Russia's Kommersant daily, however, cited a relative of Gelayev as saying he had been studying in Syria, had decided to leave due to the violence and was killed on his way to Turkey.

In Syria's largest city, Aleppo, tank shells crashed into buildings in the rebel-held Saif al-Dawla district, even as displaced civilians came back to check their houses or pick up abandoned belongings.

A man in a dirty T-shirt and tattered sandals, who gave his name as Mohammed, said his home was in the nearby neighbourhood of Salaheddine, now back in army hands after days of fighting.

"Me and my two brothers and our families left to stay with friends. I left with what I'm wearing. We are four families in one house," he said, as shells landed a few hundred metres (yards) away. "Does the world care about Syrians? I think not."

Aleppo, a once-prosperous commercial hub, is living through desperate times, divided by war, its streets stinking with rubbish and residents uncertain whether to flee or stay.

Rebel-held areas are at the mercy of army tanks, planes and helicopter gunships, with civilians now caught up in a conflict which Aleppo had mostly avoided until a rebel offensive in July.

"Where are we to go? Yesterday they hit the rebel base across the road, but nowhere is safe in Aleppo. The planes bomb everywhere," said a carpenter who feared to give his name.

"If there is a safe place in Syria, tell me. We don't have the money to leave the country," the 53-year-old added.

YouTube footage showed a funeral in Daraya of a mother and five children from the al-Sheikh family. Activists said the victims were killed by shellfire in the town after fleeing this week's military offensive on the Damascus suburb of Mouadamiya.

The bodies were wrapped in white shrouds, the children's faces exposed. Mourners laid green branches on the corpses and cried: "There is no god but Allah, Assad is the enemy of Allah."

BRAHIMI'S MISSION

International diplomacy has failed to brake the conflict in Syria, which the United Nations says has cost more than 18,000 lives since a popular uprising erupted in March 2011.

Outgoing U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan has blamed splits in the U.N. Security Council, where Russia and China have repeatedly blocked Western efforts to ramp up pressure on Assad, for the failure of his peace mission.

Babacar Gaye, the head of U.N. monitors sent to observe an abortive ceasefire declared by Annan on April 12, was expected to leave Damascus on Thursday. The mission's mandate has expired and was not renewed due to the spiralling violence.

Annan's successor, veteran Algerian diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi, was flying to New York for a week of consultations at the United Nations, his spokesman Ahmad Fawzi said.

It is not clear how Brahimi can succeed where Annan failed, given the deadlock among big powers and the intractable conflict in Syria, where Assad's minority Alawite-based ruling system is pitted against mostly Sunni opponents.

The upheaval in Syria, at the heart of a volatile Middle East, is already spilling over into its neighbours.

Sporadic clashes between Sunnis and Alawites erupted for a fourth day in Lebanon's northern city of Tripoli, breaching a truce agreed less than 24 hours earlier, after Sunni gunmen shot dead an Alawite man. Nine people were wounded in the fighting.

At least 13 people have been killed and more than 100 wounded in Sunni-Alawite fighting in Lebanon this week that has been fuelled by sectarian tensions in Syria.

Ankara has grown alarmed at apparent links between Kurdish militants fighting in southeast Turkey and the conflict in Syria. Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has accused Assad of backing Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) fighters and says Turkey's military might act to counter any threat from the PKK in Syria.

Turkish and U.S. diplomats, intelligence and military officials held talks in Ankara on Thursday expected to touch on a possible buffer zone in Syria and steps to stop PKK militants in the border region from exploiting the chaos.

French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian suggested Western nations and allies could consider setting up a limited no-fly zone over part of Syria without a U.N. Security Council mandate.

It was the first time Paris has talked of intervention by an "international coalition" rather than by the U.N.

"The scenario mentioned by (U.S. Secretary of State) Hillary Clinton of a particular zone where there could be a banned area is something that needs to be studied," Le Drian said.

Romney, Ryan pulled into abortion debate

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) ? Republicans Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan found themselves dragged into a debate Wednesday over hot-button social issues and answering for differences between their personal positions on abortion, just days before a national convention aimed at showing a unified Republican party. The discussion lingered while President Barack Obama and Romney tangled from afar over issues like education and the deficit.

The GOP ticket dealt with a renewed focus on abortion in the wake of comments about "legitimate rape" from Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin, remarks that have caused an uproar and generated demands from Romney and party leaders for the congressman to quit the race.

The questions over abortion overshadowed events by Romney and Ryan in the battleground states of Iowa, North Carolina and Virginia ? three states which Obama carried in 2008 ? ahead of next week's Republican convention in Tampa, Fla. Obama rallied supporters in Nevada, the state with the nation's highest unemployment rate of 12 percent, before heading to New York for a basketball-themed fundraiser.

Since selecting Ryan as his running mate, Romney has faced questions about how his policy positions differ from those espoused by Ryan, the architect of a controversial budget blueprint that would dramatically alter Medicare. On abortion, Romney does not oppose abortion in cases of rape and incest or if it will save the mother's life, while Ryan does oppose abortion in cases of rape and incest.

Ryan, in an interview with a Pennsylvania TV station, emphasized Romney's role at the top of the ticket, saying he was proud of his record on the social issue. "I stand by my pro-life record in Congress. It's something I'm proud of. But Mitt Romney is the top of the ticket and Mitt Romney will be president and he will set the policy of the Romney administration," he said.

Ryan defended a bill he cosponsored in the House to permanently ban federal funding for abortion except in cases of incest and "forcible" rape. That language, which was eventually changed, would have narrowed the exception for rape victims. Akin and 225 other members of the House, including 11 Democrats, also cosponsored the bill.

Akin, who is challenging Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill in a race that could determine control of the Senate, was asked in an interview that aired Sunday if abortion should be legal in cases of rape. Akin said: "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

Democrats have tried to tactfully steer the debate over abortion to appeal to female voters, including those living in hotly-contested suburbs in battleground states such as Colorado, Florida, Ohio and Virginia. Obama did not address Akin's comments in Nevada, but his campaign honed in on the legislation related to federal funding for abortions. Obama campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith said Ryan had "worked with Todd Akin to try to narrow the definition of rape and outlaw abortion even for rape victims."

A new AP-GfK poll found that Obama maintained a slight lead among women voters, with 50 percent of women backing the president and 44 percent supporting Romney. The gender gap was similar to a finding in a June AP-GfK poll. Men were more closely divided in the latest AP-GfK poll, with 49 percent for Romney and 44 percent for Obama. In the suburbs, the candidates were closely divided, with 47 percent supporting Romney and 44 percent for Obama.

Akin has refused to heed calls to step down and now would need a court order by Sept. 25 to leave the race. After that point, there would be no way to remove his name from the ballot. Ryan called the Missouri congressman and unsuccessfully urged him to exit the race, but said he had no other plans to speak to him about it.

"He's going to run his campaign and we're going to run ours," Ryan said of Akin.

Campaigning in Iowa, Romney avoided talk of social issues during a stop at a manufacturing company in Bettendorf, instead criticizing Obama for failing to bring down the nation's debt and deficit.

Later, during a fundraiser in Little Rock, Ark., Romney called Wednesday a "very revealing day" because of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office's warnings of a new recession ? including unemployment rates of more than 9 percent by late next year ? if Washington continues its stalemate over taxes and spending cuts. Romney said the CBO's conclusions were "unacceptable."

"This is a challenging time for America and one thin g I will do is I will finally cut federal spending, encourage growth and as a result of those two things get America to a balanced budget," Romney said.

Obama focused on education for a second straight day in Nevada, telling supporters at a North Las Vegas high school that GOP budget plans crafted by Ryan would force dramatic education cuts even as Romney's plan would "shower" tax cuts on millionaires.

"I've got a question for Gov. Romney. How many teachers' jobs are worth another tax cut for millionaires and billionaires? How many kids in Head Start are worth a tax cut for somebody like me who doesn't need it? How many grants and loans for college students are worth a tax cut for Gov. Romney who certainly doesn't need it?" Obama asked the crowd.

Romney countered that he heard the president "say how he wants to invest in young people. Let me tell you, if you want to invest in young people ... you need to make sure that our K-12 schools are getting better. That's No. 1. Not just talk, but actually getting better." He added that the nation needs "to make sure that we create jobs in this country so people coming out of school can get a good job."

Romney was ending the day with fundraisers in Little Rock, Ark.

Beyond the rallies, both campaigns were trying to sway voters on television. Romney's campaign released a new ad linking Obama's divisive health care overhaul to cuts in Medicare. The ad, titled "Nothing's Free," asserts that Obama raided $716 billion from Medicare in order to pay for his health care law. It's the first ad Romney's campaign has run focusing on health care since the Supreme Court upheld Obama's federal mandate in June.

Romney has promised to roll back the Medicare spending cuts approved under Obama, while Ryan kept the cuts in his budget proposals. The campaign did not say where the health care ad would run.

The Obama campaign released an ad suggesting Ryan's education cuts would lead to larger class sizes. A couple featured in the ad bemoans the prospect of increased class size and says Romney "cannot relate" to their desire to have the best public education system for their children. The ad is running in Virginia and Ohio.

With Republicans closing in on their convention, Obama's team is trying to steal some of the spotlight. Obama planned campaign events on college campuses in Iowa and Colorado on Tuesday ? including an evening rally in Fort Collins, Colo., on the GOP convention's first night ? and in Virginia on Wednesday. Vice President Joe Biden was traveling to Florida on Monday and Tuesday, including a stop in Tampa, and popular first lady Michelle Obama was appearing on "The Late Show with David Letterman" on Wednesday, a show that will air shortly after Ryan's address to the convention.

Obama won all four states in 2008 and are considered pivotal to Romney's path to the White House this year.
