A swimmer who was feared to have drowned in the waters off Long Island, N.Y., last weekend was confirmed to be alive after he was held?briefly?by authorities several states away, The Associated Press reported.
Raymond Roth was detained in South Carolina on Thursday morning as he was headed back to New York, the AP reported. On Wednesday, Roth's brother told police Roth had called him from Florida.
It is not clear how Roth got to South Carolina or where he was coming from when he was stopped.
Police released him a short time later.
Roth, 47, had been missing since Saturday, when he went swimming near Jones Beach with his adult son before his son lost sight of him in the water.
The area where Roth went swimming is not?watched?by lifeguards.?
Newsday reported that on Wednesday evening after police?heard from Roth's brother, prompting them to stop a four-day search that had involved the U.S. Coast Guard and other emergency units was called off.

Before authorities heard from Roth's brother, the search became a body recovery.?
Police are not sure if he was trying to fake his death.
"Now the investigation is, of course, taking a different direction," Park Police Detective Sgt. Thomas Duignan told Newsday Wednesday night. "We're trying to determine whether this was planned, and whether there was any intent."
The name of Roth's brother and the location in Florida where Roth was thought to be were being withheld?by?police.??
Roth's wife told police she thought her husband had drowned and had no idea about the situation, the paper reported.?
