Allergy attacks often start with nothing more than an itch. The next warning would be a rash or facial swelling.
Severe reactions (allergies) are set off in your body by allergens, substances that may be either natural or chemical. They could be in your food, your chosen fragrance, your cosmetics ? even your medication. Allergens can be taken in by eating, drinking, breathing or absorbed through your skin.
True allergies are potentially dangerous medical conditions. When you suspect a strong allergic reaction of some kind, stop talking about it. Consult a medical professional immediately.
Allergic reactions occur very soon after exposure to the trigger substance, often within hours.
Hypersensitivity to an allergen causes your immune system to react in an exaggerated manner. Sneezing, itching, swelling may lead to shock. This can be life-threatening and needs immediate medical assistance. Have someone take you straight to the Emergency Room.
Always take severe allergic reactions very seriously. This is important enough to repeat: Get qualified medical assistance and get it ASAP!
When it comes to skin care and cosmetics, allergic reactions are common, even though today?s products are produced by squeaky-clean labs, under strict inspection standards, using the finest and purest ingredients available.
There are several reasons for this:
Allergies are often passed down through families. If you suspect an inherited tendency, check with family members to find out if they are aware of any problems.
In your childhood, were you exposed to unusual amounts of chemical products, especially ones with fumes? Also, the air around you everyday carries a load of chemical irritants ? gasoline fumes, smoke, paint fumes and so on.
Skin problems and more serious reactions often stem from chemicals in those familiar products you have in your home like cleansers, polishes, air fresheners, bleaches and so on.
Artificial (chemical) fragrances turn up in almost everything now, not just your cosmetics. Have you been regularly breathing air scented by candles or clothing that spent time in the dryer with those little scented sheets?
Chemicals are not the worst offenders, however. Most allergies are triggered by plants. Remember how spring pollen made you sneeze? Ever run into poison ivy? Or suffer from the effects of ragweed? You may discover allergens in peanuts, walnuts, onions, garlic? and just about anything else.
If you are allergic to any kind of plant, be aware that the finest beauty products are made with botanical ingredients. Use caution when first applying a new product. Use a tiny amount and wait 24 hours if possible. Increase the amount gradually, just to be on the safe side. With fine products, you need surprisingly little to get beneficial results.
In the event you suspect you are allergic to something in a cream or lotion, immediately stop using it. The same product may be your best friend?s very favorite item but reactions are an individual matter. And don?t assume that the product is at fault. It simply is not the right cream or lotion for you because of the unique composition of your physical system.
Trying to locate the offending substances can be done with a battery of tests by a dermatologist. Or you can do it yourself if you are willing to put up with a certain amount of frustration and to toss out unsatisfactory items. This takes time but it gets adequate results at less cost.
The self-test is easy to do. Simply apply a very small amount to the inside of your elbow. Wait up to 24 hours. A bad reaction will usually show up sooner but you can?t be too careful. Do each product separately.
The next step is to keep a list of ingredients from product labels for the ones you test. When you have a reaction to two or more items, compare the label information. There may be a common ingredient. Make a note to check for the suspected substance before using other products. Keep on testing every new product.
Your skin care and cosmetic products have the potential to trigger reactions. Allergic symptoms are serious. Avoid them if you can. If you cannot, at least take them seriously.
