NFL Week 4 hot topics: Michael Vick's job security, Saints struggles and more

What?s hot heading into Week 4, with the regular referees back, and only three teams remaining unbeaten?

Michael Vick could lose his job to turnovers, putting Andy Reid in more danger of losing his job

I can?t wait to see Sunday night?s game in person in Philadelphia, mainly to see how Vick handles the Giants? ferocious pass rush.

The Eagles (2-1) can?t keep winning if Vick keeps turning the ball over so frequently. He has nine turnovers in three games. Vick has more turnovers than any other team (let only player) except the Chiefs, who also have nine.

There?s no way Reid is eager to bench Vick in favor of Nick Foles, a rookie who looked good during preseason, but has never started a regular-season game.

However, Sunday night begins a critical three-game stretch for the Eagles against playoff teams from 2011. They visit the Steelers in Week 5, then return home to face the Lions in Week 6.

Facing the Giants could be another nightmare for Vick. They have pass rushers that force quarterbacks into mistakes. Not all of the turnovers have been Vick?s fault as the Eagles? offensive line has serious protection issues. Vick, however, has been guilty of holding the ball too long, and not recognizing blitzes quickly enough.

Sunday night will be another referendum on Vick, the Eagles? offensive line, and the Eagles? legitimacy as a Super Bowl contender. Reid is the NFL?s longest-tenured coach, but he has not won a Super Bowl. Giants coach Tom Coughlin has won two.

Win or lose Sunday night, the Giants know they are capable of taking their game to another level at any time. Look at how they dismantled the Panthers, 36-7, in Week 3. Look at how Eli Manning has played in fourth quarters throughout his career, and during January runs to the Super Bowl.

Vick does not have that kind of track record, and Reid no longer has the job security Coughlin enjoys, following the Eagles? not-so-great 8-8 record in 2011. Reid can?t let this season get away from him. What if Vick falters the next three weeks, and the Eagles are 2-4 heading into their Week 7 bye? That could mean bye-bye for Vick as a starter. Which could eventually mean bye-bye for Reid.

Tom Brady doesn?t do three-game losing streaks. Or does he?

The Patriots? future Hall of Fame quarterback has not lost three straight games since 2002. Having dropped their last two, the Patriots (1-2) visit the Bills on Sunday, in what will be a great atmosphere.

The Bills (2-1) are hungry to be respected as a playoff contender. Beating the Patriots, who need a win badly, would be a statement.

Defensive end Mario Williams got the big bucks from the Bills during the offseason for games like this. If the Bills? talented front four of Williams, Mark Anderson, Marcell Dareus, and Kyle Williams can stay in Brady?s face, it could set the tone.

Asked about the criticism he received after the Jets blew out the Bills in Week 1, Williams brought up his past, when the Texans were criticized for picking him No. 1 in the draft over Reggie Bush in 2006.

``I guess these analysts forget,?? Williams said during a conference call this week. ``Everything pretty much worked out there (Houston) for six years, being a part of that team and changing things around. I have heard criticism my whole career, whether it is about me or the team I am playing with. And the end of the day, I prevailed. So that is what I am looking to do here.??

For Williams, handing Brady a third straight loss would be a sign that things are changing for the better in Buffalo.

Are they Lions or cubs?

The Lions were a feel-good story last season, making the playoffs for the first time since 1999. But they are 1-2 heading into Sunday?s game against the Vikings. Late-game mistake and porous defense have hurt the Lions in the young season. They are giving up 31.3 points per game. It will be tough for them to win consistently unless that number goes down.

The Lions have a bye in Week 5, and being 2-2 would feel so much better than 1-3. But the Vikings are no longer pushovers, with quarterback Christian Ponder looking like one of the NFL?s most improved players. If the Lions drop to 1-3, in the tough NFC North, they could be the latest example of how fleeting NFL success can be.

Which hangover is worse, the Bounty Scandal, or the Replacement Rip Off?

Both the Saints and Packers need love heading into Sunday?s matchup at Lambeau Field. The Saints are looking at a possible 0-4 start. The Packers (1-2) need to move on, after feeling ripped off by the replacement referees in Seattle.

No wonder the NFL has so many people hooked. A month ago, you would have been hard pressed to find anyone that said, ``Starting Week 4, the Cardinals will be 3-0, and the Saints and Packers will have one victory between them.??

Enjoy your Sunday.

John Vespasian: Ignore the gloomy predictions from the media. How ...

Why would anyone devote efforts to convince himself that he cannot improve his own situation? Although many individuals are conscious of the disadvantages of psychological immobility, such paralysis is frequently endorsed. Millions of men and women fall prey to self-imposed restrictions that they could remove if they wished.

Personal development is the opposite of immobility

Why are restraining beliefs so ingrained in society? What makes human beings support fantasies in word and deed? How is it possible that some people devote their energies to pretending that paralysis is an acceptable approach to living?

Three reasons explain why human beings are often deeply invested in immobility. Social convenience is the first, since it feels good to belong to the majority. Financial benefit is the second, since many doors are closed to those who ask uncomfortable questions. The third motive, fear of rejection, is perhaps the strongest.

Each of those justifications possesses extraordinary appeal on its own. All three combined are almost irresistible. Nevertheless, experience proves that, in the long run, doubt and psychological paralysis will destroy a man's life.

Personal growth is more important than short-term convenience

Social convenience can lead people to repress their best initiatives. The habit of seeking conformity deprives men of the force to pursue their dreams and stake their claims. However, the financial benefits of immobility, although sweet, tend to be short-lived.

In industrial societies, the negative consequences of rejection tend to be exaggerated by the media. Nowadays, global markets allow innovators to find their customers anywhere in the world even if their ideas are not appreciated by friends and neighbours.

Thinking for yourself is difficult in the face of opposition. The golden advantages of social convenience always seem, at first sight, the obvious choice, but conformity and passivity make man's happiness impossible. Becoming aware of long-term consequences of immobility and taking rational initiative mark the path to success.

Inaction and conformity have so many advantages that, for some people, they become the choice by default. Few are told that those short-term benefits are dwarfed by their lifetime costs. Seldom is the fact mentioned that long-term passivity wipes out man's capacity for attaining success and happiness.

How to be fearless and find happiness in life

Psychological immobility arises when people are overwhelmed by problems, threats, or obstacles that look insurmountable. Logic and evidence provide the means to dispute and eliminate from our mind the fallacies that feed mental passivity. Rationality is what allows a person to make reasonable calculations and take action to improve his life.

For instance, if you want to avoid psychological exhaustion, you should never take it personally when people do stupid things. Never allow yourself to be paralysed by the fact that other persons have made a large mistake.

Stand up and resume your efforts to attain success. Get back on your feet and avoid the temptation of passivity, since it produces nothing and leads to nothing. Motivational paralysis only serves to waste your life.

Make a point also to ignore gloomy predictions from the media, friends, or family. Most depressing statements are not true anyway and the world is not coming to an end. Do not join people wallowing in their misery. Never fall into immobility out of fear of things that, most likely, will never happen. Asses your alternatives, pick up the best, and begin to move in the right direction.
?
The solution is self-improvement through rational living

What looks today as universal malignancy often turns to be just another benign local problem that is quickly forgotten. What today seems a serious challenge has often little long-term significance. For those who refuse to be paralysed, catastrophes frequently contain the seed of profitable opportunities.

When people embrace passivity, that's the best time to take swift action. A crisis, personal or otherwise, should be faced through relentless initiative, not with immobility. Nobody but you can decide when a game is over.

Psychological paralysis is the worst enemy of achievement and happiness. Immobility is always a losing proposition. What you learn on bad days builds your creativity and strength of character. For those who remain alert and active, opportunities are created every minute.

UK to tackle listing rules as Bumi debacle escalates | South China ...

London?s ambitions to attract foreign-owned mining companies have suffered a sharp blow with the announcement by Bumi Plc of an inquiry into alleged irregularities at subsidiaries, just days before a clamp-down on listing rules.

The Financial Services Authority (FSA) will publish proposals next Tuesday designed to protect investors and ease concerns that London-listed companies such as Bumi, an Indonesian coal venture co-founded by financier Nat Rothschild, are diluting standards of corporate governance.

Bumi?s launch of an inquiry this week into potential irregularities in more than US$500 million of funds follows unrelated concerns at fellow natural resources firm ENRC and oil producer Genel.

?Bumi is one of a number of recently listed companies that, whilst traded on the UK market, is essentially an overseas business,? said PIRC, a corporate governance consultant that advises pension funds and fund managers with combined assets of over 1.5 trillion pounds (US$2.44 trillion).

PIRC noted concerns shared by regulators and investors about groups with dominant shareholders in which relatively few shares are traded on the market.

?A number of such companies in the extractives industries have a very limited free float, meaning that minority shareholders can struggle to have their voices heard, and unusual governance practices are difficult to challenge,? it said.

The FSA proposals are expected to tighten rules on reverse takeovers - often seen as backdoor listings - as well as addressing the size of free floats, the power of controlling shareholders, corporate governance and the independence of company boards.

They are also likely to prevent cash shell companies, small listed companies into which larger private groups are typically folded in a reverse takeover, from joining London?s top indices.

Pushing some new listings onto ?regulatory light? standard listings, rather than premium listings, might not seem too onerous for those seeking cash quickly. But preventing them from joining the prestigious FTSE indices will protect tracker fund investors from unwittingly placing cash in riskier companies.

Nevertheless, experts concede the FSA?s powers to improve corporate governance are limited. As it tries to strike a balance between tightening rules and ensuring London remains attractive for international companies the principle of ?caveat emptor? ? or ?let the buyer beware? - rules.

?If you comply with listing rules, there is often very little the FSA can do,? said one source familiar with the regulator. ?It is ultimately up to individual shareholders whether they buy into that particular company.?

Bumi was born after London-listed cash shell Vallar - led by 41-year-old Rothschild, the hedge fund veteran and scion of the Rothschild banking dynasty, and James Campbell, the former head of Anglo American?s coal arm - engineered a reverse takeover of Indonesian coal assets and re-listed in 2011.

The aim was to marry the Rothschild name to the Bakrie brothers, one of Indonesia?s most powerful business families, to create the world?s biggest thermal coal company and one of the largest listed groups on the London bourse.

But as newly-named Bumi joined London?s FTSE index, tensions rose quickly. A leaked letter last year from Rothschild to Ari Hudaya, then chief executive of both Bumi Plc and an affiliate, PT Bumi Resources, urged a ?radical cleaning up? of Jakarta-listed PT Bumi Resources.

On Monday the company commissioned London law firm Macfarlanes to launch an urgent investigation into potential financial irregularities at its subsidiaries, including PT Bumi Resources, sending its shares spinning.

Roger Barker, head of corporate governance at the Institute of Directors, told the Reuters Russia Investment Summit in Moscow that the affair had called into question the ?Rothschild model? of creating a shell to invest in emerging markets assets.

?Given what has happened to the share price of that particular vehicle, it hasn?t been a good deal for investors, and investors are going to be looking quite warily at that type of approach going forward,? he said.

The story echoes that of ENRC, which has had two separate independent probes following whistleblower allegations, one involving Kazakh and one its international businesses. The results of the first have been presented verbally to Britain?s Serious Fraud Office. The second is still underway.

Lawyers expect Bumi?s Macfarlanes report also to find its way to the SFO. The fraud squad declined to comment.

Russian firms and companies in the natural resources sector have increasingly dominated the trickle of businesses going public in London, raising concerns about investor protection.

The FTSE Group, an index provider owned by the London Stock Exchange, has already tightened entry requirements for its UK indices. This responded to investors? worries that companies with low free floats and hazy corporate governance standards could join the FTSE 100 index of top blue-chips too easily.

?I welcome the bar being high, so companies that get there, stay there,? said Riccardo Orcel, deputy chief executive of Russian bank VTB Group.

London has long been considered the listings hub for natural resources companies. But in an effort to broaden its appeal, it plans to lift some restrictions for technology listings, paving the way for a battle with dominant tech hub New York.

'Homeland' cheat sheet: What you need to know

By Sean T. Collins, RollingStone.com

Nadav Kander / Showtime

Claire Danes and Damian Lewis of "Homeland."

"Homeland"?is hot. The Showtime series'?surprise sweep?of the Emmys last Sunday has people lining up to check out the Claire Danes/Damian Lewis/Mandy Patinkin-starring suspense saga's season premiere on Sunday, like shoeless travelers waiting for the full-body scan at airport security. That makes this the perfect time to catch up on Season One's major players, plot twists and unsolved mysteries with our "Homeland"?cheat sheet.

Whether you're a fresh-faced rookie or a grizzled veteran who just needs a refresher, consider this your intelligence briefing.

WARNING: Many Season One spoilers ahead.

Sgt. Nicholas Brody is a terrorist . . .
Captured in Iraq and held prisoner by al Qaeda torturers for eight years, Marine sniper Nick Brody (Damian Lewis) was presumed dead until he was "rescued" by American forces and brought home at last. But it was all an elaborate al Qaeda scheme to use Brody, whom they'd successfully turned against the U.S. while he was in captivity, as a sleeper agent. In fact, the single biggest surprise of "Homeland"?Season One was how quickly it confirmed Brody's shady status. Sure, they faked us out about his potential innocence now and then, but instead of some big is-he-or-isn't-he mystery, they made Brody's true allegiance clear before the pilot's closing credits rolled.

More from RollingStone.com: 'Modern Family,' 'Homeland' win big at 2012 Emmys

. . . a politically well-connected terrorist . . .
As a returning war hero with a photogenic family, Brody's a media darling, and he's been used to help sell the ongoing War on Terror since his first day back. The ambitious, amoral vice president, William Walden, even hand-picked Brody to replace a disgraced congressman in the House of Representatives. This gives Brody the perfect opportunity to get close to political, intelligence and military movers and shakers ??an opportunity his al Qaeda minders take advantage of when they send him to blow up the VP and his team with a suicide vest.

. . . and an actually-not-a-horrible-guy-kinda terrorist.?
But as you can tell by the fact that he's, y'know, alive for Season Two, Brody didn't go through with it ??in part because the bomb malfunctioned, but mostly because he couldn't bear breaking his family's hearts or taking innocent lives. His whole motive for joining al Qaeda in the first place was his disgust with the "collateral damage" America's wars have produced. And in his (unreleased, obviously) video suicide note, he says he set out to kill the vice president not because he hates America, but because he loves it too much to let guys like the VP destroy its honor. He ends the season by rejecting terrorist mastermind Abu Nazir's violent ways and insisting he can change America's destructive policies from the inside.

Carrie Mathison spent months trying to stop him . . .
One woman came closer than anyone else to catching Brody: CIA analyst Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes), who works to protect the country with a white-hot intensity any terrorist would envy. Tipped off about a flipped American POW by a terrorist-turned-informant long before Brody resurfaced, she was a lone voice calling for surveillance of the homecoming hero ??surveillance she ended up setting up illegally with help from her ex-spook buddy Virgil (David Marciano) when her requests were denied. No matter how many times he seemed to establish his innocence, Carrie invariably found the one crack in his excuses and alibis.

. . . and also falling in love with him . . .
Oh, right ??she slept with him, too. We'd already gotten hints that she could be dangerously reckless, but after the Agency pulls the plug on her surveillance program, she decides to keep an eye on Brody by making contact outside of work. Estranged from his wife due to his PTSD, Brody ends up conducting a whirlwind weekend-long affair with Carrie, before breaking it off when he realizes she suspects him of being a sleeper agent. At first it seems like Carrie did this just to try to trip him up, but by season's end it's clear she actually does love him, even though she believes he's guilty as sin. The heart wants what it wants, man.

More from RollingStone.com: Rob Sheffield's 2012 fall TV preview: 'Homeland'

. . . and she was right, but no one believed it . . .
Time and again, circumstances made Brody look innocent. That flipped POW that Carrie was warned about? Turns out Brody's sniper partner Tom Walker, whom Brody thought he'd beaten to death at his captors' gunpoint, was still alive and working for al Qaeda as well. The captured terrorist who committed suicide with a smuggled razor blade after a visit from Brody? Turns out there's a mole inside the Homeland Security apparatus who could have gotten it to him instead. The fact that he's covering up his encounters in captivity with Nazir, or killing Walker, or converting to Islam and praying behind the closed doors of his garage? Maybe he's just ashamed of how his captors broke him, or afraid of how his family would react. The suicide bombing Carrie was so convinced Brody was about to commit? Never happened. By that point she may as well have been ranting about Bigfoot.

. . . and she doesn't believe it either, because she's bipolar.
After getting caught in an explosion targeting a member of Brody's support network who'd outlived his usefulness, Carrie cracks. Her psychiatrist sister has been medicating her for bipolar disorder for years, keeping it a secret from the CIA so she wouldn't lose security clearance, and the blast sends her into the mother of all manic episodes, during which she loses her job when Brody rats out their affair to the Agency. She becomes so fixated on Brody's guilt that she shows up at his house, confronting his wife and daughter about the husband and father they love. When the bomb doesn't blow, she believes she?was wrong about everything, and signs up for electroconvulsive therapy in hopes that shock treatment will stop her mania from recurring. Unfortunately, this also wipes out her knowledge of a clue that more or less proves Brody's guilt.

Abu Nazir is a terrorist mastermind . . .
The head of al Qaeda in Iraq and Brody's personal overseer, Abu Nazir (Naveed Nagahban) is the world's most wanted terrorist. He flipped both Brody and his partner???whom he orders Brody to kill following the failed suicide bombing, in order to prove his continued loyalty ??maintains a support network throughout the U.S. and remains in periodic contact with Brody, encouraging him to remember his mission. We've heard some pretty sinister things about what happens to the families of people who don't.

. . . and Vice President William Walden is pretty much just as bad.
That mission would never have taken place without the actions of Vice President Walden (Jamey Sheridan), who ordered a drone strike on a school in hopes that it'd hit Nazir and ended up killing 82 children, including one very close to both Nazir and Brody. Walden's now running for president, and he's accepted Brody into his inner circle in hopes that some of that war-hero glamor will rub off, but he remains committed to the warmongering policies that spurred Nazir and Brody's quest for vengeance in the first place.

Saul Berenson is the best in the biz . . .
Saul (Mandy Patinkin) is Carrie's bushy-bearded, soft-spoken mentor, one of the few people in the Agency who not only recognizes her brilliance ??everyone does ??but also has found a way to put up with all the impulsivity and intensity that goes with it. Saul may be even smarter than Carrie: His knack for winning the trust of the people he interrogates and his ability to put together a big picture from small details helped him nab several of Nazir's accomplices. Unfortunately, his workaholism cost him his marriage.

. . . and David Estes is a tool . . .
The consummate company man, Estes (David Harewood) was part of Vice President Walden's inner circle when the order to blow up the school was given, and he helped cover it up even when Carrie and Saul were looking for the reason why Nazir was so active again after months off the radar. He's very much a political creature, which has made him the Agency's go-between for Walden and Brody, enabling them to get too close to CIA decision-making for anyone's good. He was Carrie's boss, before he fired her over her affair with Brody, her illegal surveillance operation and her bipolar disorder ??and oh yeah, he used to date her, which cost him his marriage.

. . . and any of them could be an al Qaeda mole.
Nazir has someone on the inside, feeding him information and tipping off his minions when the CIA is on their trail, leading to escapes, suicides and even a bombing in the middle of downtown D.C. It could be Saul, who initially failed a polygraph test asking about the smuggled razor blade an al Qaeda prisoner used to kill himself. It could be Galvez (Hrach Titizian), Saul and Carrie's go-to guy for delicate and demanding operations they can't pull off themselves, who's secretly spying on Carrie for Estes. It'sprobably not Estes or Walden, since Brody nearly blew them up, but who knows?

It's really all about a kid named Issa . . .
The most important character on "Homeland"?has been dead for three years. When Abu Nazir took Brody out of isolation and gave him limited freedom to win him over, he also "hired" the Marine to teach English to his adorable son Issa (Rohan Chand). The kid learned quickly, and before long the two of them were playing soccer and singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" ??Brody was the loving father Nazir could never be, and Issa was the young son Brody's captivity had robbed him of raising back home. Then Issa and 81 of his classmates died in the vice president's drone strike, driving Nazir and Brody to plan revenge. Years later Brody would scream Issa's name while sleeping next to Carrie; when she and Saul uncovered the covered-up drone strike she realized who he was talking about, but seconds later a jolt of ECT wiped the clue from her brain.

. . . and a teenager named Dana.
Like Carrie, Brody's teenage daughter Dana (Morgan Saylor) both loves her dad, and suspects him. She's the one who's most upset that her mother Jessica (Morena Baccarin) kept her relationship with Brody's Marine buddy Mike (Diego Klattenhoff) a secret when Brody came back from the dead. She's the one who catches Brody praying to Allah and keeps the secret of his conversion to Islam out of respect. She's the one who notices something is wrong in the days leading up to the suicide bombing attempt. And she's the one who realizes there may be some truth to Carrie's manic rantings and calls her dad up at the last minute, convincing him not to go through with it without ever fully realizing he was up to anything in the first place.

With superior ground operations, Obama widens lead in Ohio

Romney campaigning in Ohio on Wednesday (Alex Wong/Getty Images)

BEDFORD HEIGHTS, Ohio? For Mitt Romney's campaign, the location was nothing more than a friendly business that had agreed to host a rally to promote the candidate's policies toward small businesses and manufacturing.

But it was hard not to view Romney's midday appearance at American Spring Wire, a company that makes wire that bounces back into place, as a possible metaphor for the candidate's electoral hopes in this crucial swing state.

"It goes right back to where it started," Romney told a crowd of several hundred people here, explaining how spring wire works.

He's hoping the same can be said of his race in this state. The Republican candidate's impromptu tutorial came as a series of new polls found that after months of a close race here between President Barack Obama and Romney, the GOP's chances in Ohio appear to be slipping away.

A New York Times/CBS News/Quinnipiac poll released on Wednesday found Obama leading Romney among likely Ohio voters by 10 points, 53 percent to 43 percent. It came on the heels of a Washington Post poll released on Tuesday that found Obama besting Romney by 8 points in the state.

They were the third and fourth polls in a row to find Obama expanding his lead in the Buckeye State?a move that prompted ABC News to change its projection of Ohio being a "toss up" state in November to one that "leans Obama."

As Romney spoke, Obama was campaigning on the other side of the state, holding his own rally at Bowling Green State University. There, the president lit into his Republican opponent, accusing Romney of wanting to gut education by giving wealthy Americans a tax cut. He also seized upon Romney's suggestion captured in a secretly filmed video at a fundraiser that 47 percent of Americans view themselves as "victims" and are too dependent on the government.

"I don't believe we can get very far with leaders who write off half the nation as victims," Obama said.

The dueling visits by Obama and Romney offered a hint at what has been one of the GOP candidate's major problems in Ohio: He's been largely outmaneuvered by his Democratic opponent, who has lavished money and attention on Ohio since he took office.

According to his campaign, Wednesday marked Obama's 13th visit to the state so far this year?and his 29th since taking office. That does not include an appearance Obama made in the state just days before he was officially inaugurated in January 2009?a visit many at the time said was the unofficial kickoff to his 2012 campaign.

According to National Journal, Obama has significantly outspent Romney when it comes to television advertising in the state: Obama dropped $41 million since May compared with just $21 million by Romney. Outside Republican groups have made up some of that ground?chipping in about $20 million in ads in the state, according to National Journal?but the Obama campaign has spent tens of millions more building up its staff and ground operation in Ohio. And the effort appears to be having an impact on the polls, especially on the issue of the economy.

In Ohio, a state that has been hard-hit by the loss of manufacturing jobs, the Romney team believed it would benefit from voter angst over the economy. But while the NYT/CBS/Quinnipiac poll found the economy is still the top issue for Ohio voters, Obama now holds a 6-point advantage over Romney when it comes to who voters believe would do a "better job." When presented with the same question in polls during July and August, the candidates were tied.

Romney still has an advantage on the economy among Ohio independents: According to the NYT/CBS/Quinnipiac poll, 51 percent of independent voters think he would best handle the economy, compared with 45 percent for Obama.

But Romney is being hurt by his drop in support among women voters, who overwhelmingly prefer Obama on the issue of the economy?59 percent to Romney's 37 percent. Overall, female voters in Ohio prefer Obama in the race, 60 percent to Romney's 35 percent.

The Romney team has worked to make up its deficit among female voters in Ohio and other battlegrounds, appealing to them through television ads on issues like the growing federal deficit?one of the few areas where Romney continues to have an advantage over Obama.

Nevertheless, Romney aides have refuted any suggestions the candidate is in real trouble in this state. The Romney campaign has downplayed public polls, insisting its internal numbers show the race much closer?though it declined to offer specifics.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Rich Beeson, Romney's political director, said the race in Ohio is still "inside the margin of error" and accused the Obama campaign of "spiking the ball at the 30-yard line." But he declined to say whether there is a path to victory for Romney if he can't win Ohio.

"The public polls are what the public polls are," Beeson said. "I kind of hope the Obama campaign is basing their campaign on what the public polls say. We don't. We have confidence in our data and our metrics."

In response, Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki trotted out her own sports metaphor, so to speak, likening the campaign to a horse race.

"We don't get too whipped up when we're up, or too whipped up when we're down. And we're running this race in every single swing state like we're five points down. If we need to pass out horse blinders to all of our staff, we will do that," Psaki told reporters traveling with the president.

But, she added, "As time progresses, the field is looking like it's narrowing for them. And so, in that sense, we'd rather be us than them, because we want a field?or a path, I should say?where you can drive a Mack truck through it, not one where you can drive a little scooter through it."

Rocket Readings: Sales Training Article: Solution Sales Dead

Sales Training Article: Solution Sales Dead:by?

By John Holland, Chief Content Officer, CustomerCentric Selling? - The Sales Training CompanyRead?this article to learn if solution sales is in fact dead in today's buyer marketplace and improve sales performance.
There have been a number of articles lately indicating the role of a salesperson is changing. It is difficult to disagree. Since we started teaching sales training workshops in 2002, buyer control of buying cycles has significantly increased. A recent Corporate Executive Board study stated: "nearly 60% of typical purchasing decisions (researching solutions, ranking options, setting requirements, benchmark pricing, and so on), are completed before engaging with vendors and talking with salespeople." The study goes on to say, "solution sales reps can be more of an annoyance than an asset" to knowledgeable buyers.
I agree with the findings that buyers go much further before contacting sellers, but challenge some of the conclusions that were drawn. sales training workshopsLet me begin by limiting this discussion to relatively complex offerings that could include an offering as well as implementation support or other professional services. Painting with a broad brush, efforts to get organizations 60% of the way through buying cycles, prior to interaction with a salesperson, have the following characteristics:
  • Often initiated by mid to lower levels within the company
  • Most internet research is done by lower level individuals
  • Most of the information on vendor websites is product versus outcome focused
  • Virtually impossible to determine implementation costs and professional services needed
  • Limited ability to select the "best" offering
  • Often no business outcomes defined until senior management is approached for funding
  • Without value, many of these "buying cycles" result in making "no decision"
The results of many weeks or months of research may resemble an RFP issued to vendors that lists functional specs, but no desired business outcomes that would offset the costs. The preferred vendor is often the one that has what are perceived to be the best features at the best price, without regard for whom can deliver the best cost vs. benefit.
As it relates to a seller being "an annoyance", traditional selling as described in my previous blog is in conflict with the way knowledgeable buyers want to buy. Sellers often want to try to change buyer requirements in attempting to become the preferred vendor. Premature efforts (doing so before establishing credibility and allowing buyers to articulate what they think their requirements are) will provide poor buying experiences and can be annoying.
"Solution" sales are best initiated proactively at executive levels by uncovering business outcomes that can be improved. Gaining access to committee members to quantify potential value before doing extensive research is a logical way to proceed for all parties involved. Unless there is sufficient value, it makes no sense to have mid to lower level people evaluate multiple vendors. "Solution" sellers operating in this mode minimize the chance of companies expending a great deal of effort by doing research in bottom up sales with a high probability of "no decision" outcomes.
Vendors are concerned about cost of sales. People fail to realize the costs buyers incur while evaluating offerings. A solution sale properly executed is a sanity check for buyers and vendors to determine there is sufficient value to allocate resources to evaluations.

Considering Some Home Improvement Projects? Get Help Herewith ...

You can boost your home?s value by doing home improvement projects. There are a few simple remodeling tips which can maximize your property?s value. These tips are easy, cheap methods of improving your home.

Rarely you may find water leaking underneath the sink or possibly from the faucet, but do not try to repair the leak on your own. Put a large container under the leak to catch the water and call a plumber.

If you are the victim of a recent natural disaster and your home is in need of repair, be careful which contractor you hire. There are unscrupulous people that look to scam people that have trusting natures. Make sure to read reviews of the contractors you are thinking about hiring so that this doesn?t happen to you.

Give the walkway in the front of your house a complete makeover! If you take out your front walk and put brick pavers down, you will have a unique entry. It is a staightforward job, but does take a lot of work. Try renting a jackhammer to get rid of your aged concrete walkway. When you?re done, you will have a good foundation for the pavers.

If you are looking for a simple improvement to your home then head to the store and grab some paint. A new coat of paint is just the thing to make an entire home seem brand new, and only requires a bit of time and money. Getting a new coat of paint will make your home more appealing to potential buyers.

Always tape the trim when you are repainting walls. Even if you are very careful, the paint might run. Taping the trim in a room can prevent any paint from getting on it. If paint drips onto the trim, you might need to repaint it.

Most homes do not have natural lighting in the basement. Be sure to have an artificial lighting layout plan so your basement is livable. If you happen to be one of the lucky few, your basement walls will be slightly higher than the normal ground level. If that is the case, you should be able to put in windows to bring in natural light.

You will find many types of stains available, when you decide to have your deck re-stained. You can buy clear stains, oil-based ones, solid colors, or toners on the deck. Each of them has disadvantages and advantages; research properly and choose the best for you.

Don?t get too crazy with color when painting. Neutrals create the illusion of more space. When you use large baseboards, your room will look bigger. Neither of these options is very expensive and they will make your house look better.

Does your floor appear older and older with every passing moment? If you desire to take on an ambitious project, you can tear out your old floor and lay sticky wood flooring on top of it. While many may think this flooring is cheap, it is actually very nice. It?s also very easy to install, so the vast majority of people are able to make it a DIY project.

Sealant strips and draft excluders can really help prevent the escape of air through your doors. Draft excluders go underneath the door and prevent air from going in and out. Sealant strips can do the same thing by fitting in the door frames. This can be purchased at most hardware stores.

The bottom line is that you should now have basic information about improving your home and also have some precise ideas about how to get your projects done. If you stay committed and possess an organized goal you are working toward, the tips here are going to help you get to success.

Alabama professor stands trial in deaths of three co-workers

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama (Reuters) - A former Alabama biology professor who pleaded guilty to killing three colleagues and wounding others in a 2010 shooting rampage will stand trial this week to determine her prison term.

Jury selection began on Monday for former University of Alabama at Huntsville professor Amy Bishop's abbreviated trial for murder and attempted murder. As part of a plea earlier this month, Bishop no longer faces the death penalty, Circuit Judge Alan Mann told prospective jurors.

However, Alabama law requires a jury to decide the punishment for a capital murder charge. Prosecutors are recommending Bishop, a 47-year-old Harvard-trained biologist and mother of four, serve life in prison without parole.

Bishop, who looked thin sitting in a red inmate jumpsuit and shackles in court on Monday, was accused of gunning down her colleagues execution-style during a biology department staff meeting on the Huntsville campus in February 2010.

Three co-workers died, including the department chairman, and three others were wounded.

Colleagues believed Bishop, who allegedly pulled the gun from her purse to start shooting, was angry that the school had denied her tenure.

After her arrest in Alabama, authorities in Braintree, Massachusetts, charged Bishop with the 1986 shooting death of her teenage brother.

That death initially had been ruled accidental, based on the testimony of the family.

Authorities in Massachusetts are awaiting the outcome of the Alabama trial before deciding how to proceed in their case against Bishop.

Texting blamed for rising teen pedestrian injuries

By Jacoba Urist, NBC News

James Whitaker / Getty Images

Pedestrian injuries among teens are on the rise and experts believe it's because so many are distracted by their phones while walking.

Many of us have done it -- checked our phones to read a new text or send a quick tweet as we stroll down the street. It only takes a few seconds, right? ?And while we know we should watch where we?re going, we think, worst case: we?ll bump into the person in front of us, or trip on the sidewalk.

But experts are blaming texting and walking on the rising number of pedestrian injuries and deaths among teens. Walking safely, they say, is, in fact, a two way street: it requires the focused attention of both pedestrians and drivers.

A new report shows that in recent years, pedestrian injuries among 16 to 19 year-olds increased 25 percent. Teens aged 14 to 19 made up half of all child pedestrian injuries, according to the report from SafeKids, a global non-profit organization focused on preventing injuries among children.

The study, Walking Safely: A Report to the Nation, took snapshot views of pedestrian death and injury among five year intervals from 1995 through 2010 and looked at age groups 0 to 4, 5 to 9, 10 to 14 and 15 to 19. Using data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the U.S. Census Bureau, SafeKids found that the death rate among older teens is now twice that of younger kids,?with 1.11 deaths per 100,000 members of the population as opposed to .47, .33, and .45 in the other cohorts respectively.?

While the report, sponsored by FedEx, doesn?t break down how many of those were using mobile devices at the time of injury,?Kate Carr, president and CEO of SafeKids Worldwide, says she believes that?s what is driving the rise in injuries.

?In addition to the increase in pedestrian injuries we saw among older teenagers, we also examined numerous outside reports about how much mobile use has increased among teens, ? she says. ?We know that the average number of texts per teen has risen dramatically. Couple that with drivers who are talking on the phone or texting, and you have distracted people on both sides of the equation. Our hypothesis is that the rise in injuries among these older teens is caused by their dramatic increase in their cell phone use.? ?

September and October, when kids have?headed back to school and?it?s still warm enough to walk in many places, are among the deadliest months according to the SafeKids report. To combat it, some schools have started offering programs on walking safety.

In fact, Florida Atlantic University has?made walking safety the focus of?its annual back-to-school Safety Month in September. Charles Lowe, the university's?police chief, says he's seen a significant increase in people biking or walking and texting at the same time.

?Many of the people seem unaware of what is going on around them,? he said in an email to NBC News. ?They trip over obstacles, walk out into traffic and run into other people.?

In response, this month the school is blaring messages over the speaker system in the main campuses breezeway reminding?students to stop looking at their phones and focus on their feet.

Andrea Gielen, the director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy, has worked extensively on pedestrian safety for high school and college campuses across the country and recommends parents begin teaching safe walking habits early. For starters, don't let kids cross the street until they are at least 10 without an adult so they can see parents modeling good behavior.?(Which means parents have to put down their phones too!)

And Gielen reminds parents to teach their children that they can?t necessarily rely on drivers to be paying attention. Kids, she says, need to learn how to be safe pedestrians just like they learn to be safe drivers in driver?s education classes.

Her golden three rules for all pedestrians:?

  • Follow all street signs and cross with the light
  • Always put your phone down or in your pocket before you step off the curb
  • Make eye contact with the driver before you cross

Have you ever been injured walking and texting? Tell us on Facebook.
