Rip it out and start over | Home Improvement Remodeling Contractor

If you only knew what could go ?Rong? (I thing wrong should be spelled rong, don?t you?)? in a remodeling project. Anyone who says this sort of thing doesn?t happen on their projects is either lying, hasn?t been remodeling long enough, or has been fired by a client and never got the chance to fix their mistake.

Oh No!

This is a tale of? dismal results that spiraled sideways nearly impacting the ground before we finally pull it out at the last second.

I recently had the misfortune of dealing with the fallout of a very bad paint job.

We were this close to finishing our project and the painting was basic stuff, it was only going to take an afternoon to complete.

The next thing I get is a 5:50PM phone call from my client reporting that the painter had just left but ?the paint job didn?t look very good?. I suggested we wait till morning and look at it together.

Next morning I showed up bright and early expecting to see a single fixable flaw.? It turns out that ?not looking good? was the understatement of the year. There were runs, streaks and rough spots throughout the project.

The New Mantra

My gut reaction was to have the painter return and fix it immediately. My client was willing and I showed the painter the deficiencies. ? No problem he said? ? I?ll fix it up right now? That triggered? my second visit to check up on how the fix went, still shabby. The pattern continued. The painter was not happy with his results either but I?ll be darned if he could fix it.

This next time he assured me, it is under control, ?Joe don?t worry I will come back and make it great, I?m not happy until you?re happy?.

The third time out, I brought my new Project Manager, Josh with me. ?Rip it out, we need to start over? he whispered to me.

Being one to give the benefit of the doubt to the professional painter, I allowed him one last time to fix his problem. That is when the client called and said she had had it with the painter. She went as far as to prohibit him from returning.

This could have easily been the end of the project for me. Thankfully, our client gave me one last chance to take care of the problem.

Bottom line is, Levco decided to rip it out and replaced the finish work. We employed a different painter to do the job and it all looks great now. Turns out, there were some valuable pearls of wisdom to be learned.

Let's Start Over

  1. Even professionals make mistakes they can?t fix.
  2. I could have saved time, and money, had my tolerance been lower.
  3. We eventually found a great painter.
  4. I got to see what kind of finish carpenter Josh is. (great and fast!)
  5. Josh has the personality trait I lack and is not bashful about telling it like it is and getting results.

I have always said, ?the highest level of customer service can not be achieved unless there is a problem?.? I am especially proud that we eventually turned this catastrophic failure into a happy ending. In other words, ?we always win?? We also got to ?show that we care? to our client who is very happy with the results of our problem resolution.

How would you change the Nook Tablet?

It's hard not to make a series of reductive comparisons between the Nook Tablet and the Kindle Fire. After all, it's the conflict between Barnes & Noble and Amazon that frames these two 7-inch tablet / e-reader hybrids. This one is $50 more expensive, but is technically more impressive: you get more expandability, it's faster and the screen is better for images and video. Statistically, at least three out of every ten e-book readers purchased were Nooks, so plenty of you out there use 'em. What we want to know, is what are they like to use on a daily basis? What little gripes did we not pick up during our week-long review and, if William Lynch was reading what you had to say, what would you change?

Is it Time for a Commitment Check-up? | montyrainey

?Desire is the key to motivation, but it is determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal ? a commitment to excellence ? that will enable to attain the success you seek.? ~ Mario Andretti?

We all have certain things we want out of life. Call them goals, dreams, desires or whatever else you want to call them ? it is commitment that brings them into reality. Without commitment they are nothing more than mental pictures in our minds. This applies to every endeavor in life; business, marriage, parenting, going back to college, losing weight or just about else you can think of.

Just think about all of the failed marriages in the U.S. today. Almost 50% of all first marriages end in divorce, 70% of all second marriages and over 80% of subsequent marriages fail. The court system recognizes a number of different justifiable reasons for divorce; irreconcilable differences, adultery, verbal and/or physical abuse but they all boil down to one thing ? no matter how madly in love the couple was when they exchanged their vows of marriage, at some point along the way, one or both parties lost any sense of commitment they may have once held. ?Not to stereotype (the road certainly goes both ways), but the husband that commits adultery lacks commitment. The wife that nags continuously and drives her husband away lacks commitment.

Certainly at one time the element of commitment was there, but over time coupled with the difficulties of life, dedication to commitment wanes. I?m sure at some point, politicians truly believe the promises they make, but once they are faced with opposition and the possibility of losing votes for re-election, selective memory takes over and campaign promises are long forgotten. Every year people make New Year?s resolutions with every intention of seeing them through, but when difficulties arise and it becomes a major inconvenience to find time to get to the gym or to spend more quality time with the kids or to be more active in the church or community, commitment turns to indifference and in extreme cases even into resentment. Commitment, whether on the job, in the marriage or to personal change is one of the most difficult processes to follow through on. Complete and enthusiastic commitment is essential to all achievement.

There is much written about securing employee buy-in and team building to increase commitment, but what can the individual do on their own to increase their personal commitment? I?m not going to get into the relationship aspect of commitment. That?s for another time. Right now, I want to talk about increasing personal commitment on the job.

In the workplace, commitment isn?t always easy because unlike personal relationships, it is rarely your own ideals and goals that you are being asked to commit to. It doesn?t mean you don?t care, it just means that you have doubts. You may doubt the possibility of achieving the goal. You may even doubt your own ability to deliver. You want to commit but see too many ?unknowns?, yet you know you are expected to commit, so you say ?yes? to the commitment but probably only mean ?maybe?. Rather than simply paying lip service, ask for clarification. Let it be known that you want to make a commitment in full but really would like more information so you fully understand what kind of giant you may be facing.

Commitment begins with engagement. The more engaged you are in whatever it is you are committing to, the more apt you are to stay committed. It?s up to you to stay engaged at work. So the first priority becomes making absolutely certain you are in alignment with what your team is trying to accomplish. Are you ready for the kind of commitment it will take for you to do your part? That means don?t wait for things to happen that might keep you engaged, make them happen. Make certain you stay actively involved as a member of the team. Identify your strengths and use them to be a mentor to your teammates who may not possess the same skill set. Reach out to other teammates who may be able to help you in areas that are not your strength. Examine your values and make sure they align with the team. Perhaps most important, find your happy place. If you?re not happy with your personal life, chances are good you are distracted and not fully engaged at work.

Self examination and being 100% honest with yourself is also critical. Ask yourself the difficult questions. ?Am I fully committed to this team?? If the answer is no, the next question must be, ?How to I become more engaged and committed to this team??

Square gets a few more Chinese clones, Jack Dorsey may or may not be flattered

Never mind what PayPal has just unveiled today -- look at these mobile phone credit card readers from China instead. If you ask Square CEO Jack Dorsey, we're sure he'll have to a thing or two to say about these familiar-looking dongles (and not to mention the various weibo microblogging services that were inspired by Jack's Twitter platform). Coincidentally, all three of these pictures above showed up on Sina Weibo earlier today, albeit from different accounts with very little detail in each post -- we'd like to think they're trying to make a point one after the other. So who's behind these little plastic bricks from the Far East?

Starting from the left (courtesy of Xiaomi Vice President Li Wanqiang) we have Lakala, a well-known Chinese payment service provider whose POS terminals are featured in major supermarkets and convenience stores. We spoke to the company's CEO Sun Taoran who assured us that this is a booming business in China, as credit cards are more popular than you'd expect these days (most large earteries, supermarkets and even karaoke bars in domestic cities will happily accept them); and of course, he'd certainly want a slice of that massive smartphone pie over there. The Beijing-based company also said its dongle will function even without a phone client installed, but it wouldn't further elaborate at this point. Expect to see Lakala's product launch in May.
